Helpful ancient pigs, a royal procession and Strictly sets off on a tour of the UK
-
Pigging out
What's the easiest way to clear an invasive plant that's covering a wetland nature reserve and preventing birds from reaching food in the mud below? Simple – just call in the Iron Age pigs. A group of this species (a cross between wild boars and domestic pigs) has set to work at Lilbourne Meadows in Northamptonshire. The pigs' job is to root out and munch New Zealand pygmyweed (Crassula helmsii), which has carpeted areas of the site. Once removed, the site will once again be a haven for wading birds like lapwings and oystercatchers. * wildlifebcn.org

Janette Manrara hosts the glittering show, which opens in Birmingham before moving to Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Glasgow and Nottingham, ending at The O2 in London.

Always a favourite, Mel Giedroyc is guest-starring in the English National Opera's production of HMS Pinafore. The satirical nautical romp by Gilbert & Sullivan was first performed in 1878 and became one of the duo's most popular and enduring operettas.
