Georgie had landed her dream job – but might it also bring heartache?
-
Droplets of rain coursed down the airport departure lounge windows, blending the shapes outside into an abstract watercolour. As Georgie gazed at the planes on the tarmac, the tears in her eyes accentuated the impressionist effect.
Her emotions were all over the place. She was so excited to be on her way to Paris, but it had been hard saying goodbye to her family. Thankfully it was just her dad Pete who had brought her to the airport, but did everyone have to turn up at the house beforehand to send her on her way? There was her mum Sara and Nanna Partridge in French berets, and her older brother Jake had thought it hilarious to wear a string of plastic onions around his neck. His girlfriend Hayley was in a striped T-shirt, as was Phoebe, their baby girl. The front room was decked out in red, white and blue, and everyone shared some bubbly before waving Georgie off with cries of 'Ooh la la!' and 'Bon voyage!'
All very sweet, but a bit OTT. And one face had been missing – Georgie's boyfriend Harry.
He had work commitments, so they'd met the night before at their favourite restaurant. Harry had been subdued, but Georgie had tried to lighten the mood. 'So when are you coming to Paris to see the show?' she asked brightly.
Harry shrugged. 'Not sure. Got a lot of jobs booked over the next few months.'
'But you will be coming to see me soon, won't you?'
'Yeah,' came the definitely half-hearted reply.
Georgie could feel her temper rising. She loved Harry, but his reaction when she told him about landing this job was totally unreasonable. Why couldn't he just be happy for her?
