Sitting at the table in a pub with my daughter, Angel, seven, husband, Gareth, 39, and his dad, Gary, 57, we looked like a normal family waiting to tuck into our Sunday roast.

It was January this year and as the waitress brought over our food she did a double take at Angel. 'That's a pretty necklace,' she said, looking at the silver snowflake-shaped pendant with a purple centre.

'Thank you,' Angel smiled, proudly touching it. 'It's made from my great-grandad.'

The waitress looked a bit taken back, especially as Angel went on to tell her that Gareth's blue cross necklace was also made up of bits of her great-grandad, as was Gary's silver opal ring.

But after I explained that the jewellery contained ashes, the waitress looked impressed, and I smiled proudly, knowing that I was the person who had created these very unique and precious keepsakes.

It was surprising really, considering I was a mum of one who worked full-time as a lorry driver. I'd had no formal training in jewellery making, and definitely none in the field of human ashes!

LOCKDOWN HOBBY

My jewellery making started in lockdown. Although I was still working nights as a lorry driver, not being able to socialise meant that I was keen to find something to keep me busy in my spare time.
