Any trip to Sri Lanka should start with its capital city Colombo, located on the island's west coast. It's a bustling, modern town with tuk-tuks whistling down the bumpy roads and streets lit up with vibrant fruit stalls that are so colourful you can almost taste their wares. Be prepared to see plenty of animals running loose, and not just the odd stray dog, either: elephants and monkeys are also everywhere. It's one of the magical, unforgettable features of this country.
