Had one too many? Improve your morning-after routine with these expert-trusted remedies
-
Tis the season to be jolly - until we wake up with a stonking headache and vow never to get 'merry' again. Sound familiar? You're not alone - almost two-thirds of UK drinkers say they over-indulge with alcohol more than usual during the festivities*.
And if you feel like your hangovers are hitting harder with every passing year, unfortunately, you might be right. It's down to your age. 'Liver function decreases with age, making the body less efficient at processing toxins,' says pharmacist Stuart Gale. Here's how to handle the spillover from your New Year's celebrations and get on the road to recovery the next day - fast!
How long will it last?
It varies, but it takes approximately one hour for each unit of alcohol (the equivalent of 25ml of spirit) to leave your system. Be careful if you're driving the next day as you may still be over the limit.
Start hydrating early
Dehydration could be the root cause of many of your symptoms, so address this first. If you can, start before bed by downing a pint of water, and another as soon as you get up. Electrolyte drinks, such as O.R.S Hydration Tablets (£5.45, Boots), also work to restore lost minerals including sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. 'Coffee is a popular remedy to sober up and give energy after drinking, but it can contribute to dehydration,' warns nutritionist Shona Wilkinson. Only consider it if you have something taxing you need to be able to focus on.
Fuel up with good food
