Why go?

Located in northern Europe, with an easily explored compact centre, Bergen is a historic coastal gem. Surrounded by seven mountains, almost three million tourists a year flock to the city to hike in the hills, explore UNESCO world heritage sites and cruise along its famous fjords. Even better, Bergen is close enough to the UK for a long weekend, with flights taking little more than 90 minutes.

Port of call

Bergen's historic harbour district of Bryggen is a must-visit. Filled with picture-perfect wooden houses, you can step back in time to when the German Hanseatic League ran its headquarters from the wharf, trading in stockfish, salt, beer, jewellery and grains. Bryggen has suffered many great fires over the years - the most recent in 1955 - but parts of the beautiful, medieval urban structure have been preserved and, in 1979, it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Free to visit, you can stroll through its charming narrow passageways, which are now home to artists' studios and independent craft shops.
