Make your bed more comfortable

Whether your caravan has a make-up or a fixed bed, there are steps you can take to get an even better night's sleep, says Peter Baber

Make your bed more comfortable

WE ALL LOVE the freedom that hitching up your tourer and driving away gives you. But let’s face it, sometimes, just sometimes, do you find your sleeping arrangements might be less than you wish?

We are, of course, talking about the bed in your caravan. It’s great that you have one, and it’s terribly clever how it’s been designed to fit into the layout of the caravan — but it’s simply not that comfortable. So what can you do to improve it?

Mattress matters

The first thing to consider is the surface that you sleep on. If your caravan comes with a fixed bed, and it is several years old, chances are your mattress could be well past its use-by date. Many tourer mattresses, especially older ones, are made of relatively thin foam materials that don’t last very long. The telltale signs that it is coming to the end of its useful life could be sagging or the appearance of lumps, or if you find you are waking up with aching limbs.

In that case, it might be possible simply to change your current mattress for one that is made of superior foam, including memory foam, or better still, a hybrid.

Of course, you might not be able to replace the ‘mattress’ housed in your caravan, because it is actually made up out of the settee bases that you either fold or piece together.
