My mother-in-law, who was to accompany us and had been the driving force behind our travel plans, fell sick just a few days before the trip. What we thought was a hiccup turned out to be a tragedy. Diagnosed with a serious illness, she had to be hospitalised. In an instant, our carefully laid vacation plans dissolved into uncertainty.

Having taken many unplanned trips before, my wife and I took pride in how adept we were at navigating uncertainties that popped up while on the go.
