|March-April-2025
Fiji's tourism industry is booming, with 2024 marking a year of record-breaking success. In an interview with India Outbound, Brent Hill, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji talks about its impressive growth and the emerging focus on the Indian market.
Q How was it for Fiji in 2024 globally and more specifically in the Indian market?
The year 2024 was an incredible year for tourism in Fiji. It was a record-breaking year, surpassing preand post-pandemic levels. We had really strong numbers and what it means for our country is enormous. India is an emerging market. It is a market where we can see the potential. Indian travellers are usually travelling to places like Australia and New Zealand which are on our doorstep. Fiji aims to attract a portion of that market for sure.
Do you have any numbers of the Indian market from last year?
The Indian market is experiencing growth of around 10 pc year-on-year. While this growth stems from a relatively modest starting point, there is a desire to see further expansion, particularly with improved flight connection because it is visa-free to fly into Fiji.
Which segments of travellers are you focussing on in India?
Our tourism market operates on a three-tiered structure. We attract free independent travellers (FITs) and fitness enthusiasts. Additionally, we are experiencing growth in Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) groups, along with an emerging segment of celebration guests. These guests often visit for honeymoons, weddings or similar special occasions.
Fiji boasts world-class facilities and is a remarkably accessible destination. Considering that tourism accounts for over 40 pc of the country's economy, it is a significant sector. Consequently, we have event companies, wedding planners and other services that streamline the planning process. We are also starting to observe more cruises coming in, indicating a diverse influx of tourists. But still families remain our number one priority because they often rent villas for week-long stays.
How does Fiji cater to Indian travellers seeking immersive and authentic cultural experiences?

In many ways, the year 2025 has turned out to be Africa's Year, at least on the international tourism market as the continent outpaced every other region of the world in growth in international tourist arrivals for the first half of the year. The growth seems to have continued in the second half, too, and looks certain to continue into the next year as African nations proactively seek to diversify their source markets, with focus on India and China.
