Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have propelled a seismic shift in global data center growth, with electricity demand projected to double within five years, a surge fueled by artificial intelligence workloads and cloud computing expansion, industry forecasts indicate in a recent energy outlook.

This escalation, concentrated in tech hubs like Northern Virginia and Silicon Valley, now collides with new tariff pressures from the Trump administration, threatening to disrupt the supply chains powering these facilities. The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers consumed 415 terawatt-hours worldwide last year, a figure expected to climb to between 650 and 1,050 terawatt-hours by 2030, driven by AI’s voracious appetite for computational power. Tariffs, including a 10% blanket duty on imports from most nations and a 34% levy on Chinese goods, strain the availability of critical components like steel transformers, essential for expanding grid capacity.
