APPLE CONFIRMS IPHONE PASSPORT FEATURE IS COMING SOON, EXPANDING DIGITAL ID INITIATIVES

Apple has confirmed that an upcoming update to iOS will introduce a digital passport feature for iPhone users, signaling the company's next major step in replacing traditional identification documents with secure, device-based credentials.

APPLE CONFIRMS IPHONE PASSPORT FEATURE IS COMING SOON, EXPANDING DIGITAL ID INITIATIVES

The feature, which has been in development for more than a year, is designed to allow travelers to store and present their passports directly within the Wallet app—functioning alongside Apple's existing digital ID, driver's license, and boarding pass integrations.

Although Apple has not yet provided an exact release date, the company said the feature will debut “soon” following agreements with select government agencies to enable the system's authentication framework. Once available, the iPhone passport will use a combination of biometric verification, encrypted storage, and real-time validation to confirm identity during travel or digital verification processes.

The forthcoming passport feature represents the most ambitious extension yet of Apple's digital identity efforts. Since the rollout of state-issued digital driver's licenses in Wallet beginning in 2022, Apple has steadily expanded its partnerships with authorities in the United States and abroad to digitize secure identification documents. The new system goes beyond local identity cards—it aims to create a globally recognized digital credential that adheres to international travel standards, including those defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). According to early details shared by industry sources familiar with Apple's plan, the digital passport will initially operate as a companion credential rather than a full replacement for physical passports. Travelers will still need to carry physical documents where required, but the iPhone version will streamline verification for select airports, e-gates, and government portals already testing mobile ID integration.
