AI's rapid expansion has triggered a surge in demand for high-performance data centers capable of supporting large-scale machine learning operations. These facilities are now among the fastest-growing consumers of electricity worldwide, prompting urgent questions about sustainability and the future of digital infrastructure.

THE RISING ENERGY COST OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Training a single large language model, such as OpenAl's GPT or Google DeepMind’s Gemini, can consume millions of kilowatt-hours of electricity—equivalent to the annual power use of thousands of households. Beyond training, Al models require continuous power for inference tasks, including powering real-time chatbots, image generators, and recommendation engines across millions of devices.

As Al adoption increases, especially in enterprise and consumer platforms, so too does the frequency and scale of these computations. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers, cryptocurrency operations, and Al workloads could consume more than 1,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity globally by 2026—surpassing the entire annual energy use of countries like Japan or Germany.

Industry experts warn that without major changes in infrastructure design and energy sourcing, Al could significantly undermine global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
