A bold design backed up by killer performance and amazing battery life for the Pro Max in particular

- MARK SPOONAUER

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max showcase a new design, with the camera bump extending across the entire back of the phone. In my view, it's a smart update: the full-width bar feels more “Pro”, and the aluminium unibody casing feels cooler in your hand than the old titanium edging. Enhanced Ceramic Shield coatings on the front and back provide better scratch- and crack- resistance than previous models, and Apple has introduced a bold new Cosmic Orange colour, along with Deep Blue and Silver for those who prefer a more serious look.

The OLED display is perfect for sunny days. Both phones reached almost 1,000cd/m² in our SDR tests with adaptive brightness on, with the Pro Max hitting 1,899cd/m² in HDR content, while an improved anti- reflection layer means noticeably less glare, especially in direct sunlight.
