Combating Counterfeiting in the Food Industry: Securing the Future with Innovation and Collaboration
Food & Beverages Processing
|April 2025
Counterfeiting in the food industry is an escalating crisis that threatens public health, brand integrity, and economic stability.
-
While most discussions on counterfeiting focus on luxury goods and pharmaceuticals, the food and beverage industry has quietly become a major target for counterfeiters. From adulterated oils and dairy products to mislabelled beverages and imitation condiments, counterfeit food infiltrates markets at multiple levels, leading to severe health risks and financial losses for legitimate businesses.
In developing economies like India, where food adulteration is a historical challenge, counterfeiting extends beyond premium products to essential commodities such as grains, pulses, dairy, and cooking oils. According to the ASPA and CRISIL report in 2022, about 42% of consumers willingly purchased counterfeit FMCG products, with 38% citing lower costs and 26% citing unavailability of original products as the reasons. Industry experts and manufacturers estimate that counterfeiting in this segment is highly prevalent, potentially reaching 25-30% as per the same report. Alarmingly, as per the ASPA & CRISIL survey report, about 35-40% of consumers found the FMCG products they had purchased to be fake, but none complained to the manufacturer or consumer forum, only lodging complaints with the shop owner for exchange or refund. The presence of pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial dyes in these fraudulent products can cause long-term health issues, ranging from acute food poisoning to chronic illnesses like neurological disorders.
How Counterfeiting Affects Different Food Sectors
Packaged Beverages-Soft drinks, energy drinks, and bottled water are highly susceptible to counterfeiting. Fraudulent manufacturers replicate branded packaging but fill bottles with substandard or even contaminated liquids. Consumers often cannot distinguish between genuine and fake beverages until they experience adverse health effects.
