No longer confined to being mere electricity providers, utilities are evolving into region-specific system operators managing dynamic, data-driven, and decentralised grids.
The rapid expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is emerging as both a challenge and an opportunity, reshaping grid operations, revenue models, and digital infrastructure.
EV charging is one of the fastest-growing segments of electricity demand. Unlike traditional loads, EV demand is flexible, mobile, and highly time-sensitive. If unmanaged, large-scale EV adoption could strain local transformers and increase peak demand, particularly in the evening. TERI's projections for 2030 and 2050 show that uncoordinated charging significantly amplifies peak loads. However, coordinated charging enabled by smart systems can flatten demand curves and reduce grid stress. This distinction underscores a critical point, i.e., EV growth does not automatically translate into grid instability. With the right digital tools and planning frameworks, EVs can become grid assets rather than liabilities.
