TESLA PHASES OUT MODEL S AND MODEL X AS COMPANY REFOCUSES LINEUP

Tesla has begun the formal wind-down of its longest-running vehicles, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, following earlier confirmation that production of both will conclude in 2026.

The move represents a structural shift in Tesla’s portfolio and closes the chapter on the two models that first positioned the company as a serious challenger to established luxury automakers.

Rather than an abrupt cancellation, the process appears to be a gradual phaseout, with production tapering as Tesla reallocates resources toward newer platforms and higher-volume vehicles.

FROM INDUSTRY DISRUPTORS TO LEGACY MODELS

When the Model S arrived in 2012, it fundamentally altered perceptions of electric vehicles. It delivered performance figures comparable to high-end sports sedans while offering long-range electric driving and over-the-air software updates — a novelty at the time. The Model X followed several years later, introducing distinctive falcon-wing doors and extending Tesla’s presence into the premium SUV category.

Both vehicles helped establish Tesla’s reputation for blending advanced technology with ambitious design. They also played a crucial role in convincing investors and consumers that fully electric vehicles could compete directly with established luxury brands.
