INTEL AND SOFTBANK BET ON NEXT-GENERATION AI MEMORY WITH ZAM PARTNERSHIP

A new partnership between Intel and a SoftBank-backed memory startup is bringing the chipmaker back into the memory conversation—without building fabs or returning to conventional DRAM manufacturing.

Instead, Intel is positioning itself as an architectural and packaging innovator, supplying the intellectual property and interconnect technologies that could define a new class of high-bandwidth, low-power memory for artificial intelligence data centers.

The collaboration centers on a SoftBank subsidiary often referred to as Saimemory, which is developing a technology known as Z-Angle Memory, or ZAM. Intel's role is not to make memory chips, but to provide the architectural frameworks, interconnect design, and advanced packaging platforms that allow ZAM modules to scale efficiently inside modern Al servers.

WHY INTEL IS REENTERING MEMORY WITHOUT MAKING CHIPS

Intel's exit from the memory manufacturing business several years ago was seen as a permanent retreat from DRAM and NAND. What has changed is the market itself. The explosion of AI workloads has created unprecedented demand for memory bandwidth, energy efficiency, and density. Hyperscalers and chip vendors are now constrained less by raw compute and more by how quickly data can move between processors and memory.

Rather than competing with Samsung, Micron, or SK hynix in commodity DRAM, Intel is taking a different route. Its strategy is to provide the architectural “glue” that binds compute and memory together. This includes high speed interconnects, silicon bridges, and heterogeneous packaging—areas where Intel already has deep experience.
