The cricketing world was in for a surprise when Virat Kohli called it quits from the format on May 12, 2025. With India set to tour England for a 5-match series next month, Kohli decided to bow out. It was a personal decision, and despite the BCCI wanting to convince Kohli to feature in England, the move was already made. Kohli leaves his 14-year journey in the longest format with 123 Tests under his belt. Notably, he led the Indian cricket team in 68 matches, winning a record 40 of them. Overall, he finished with a tally of 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. His tally included 30 tons and 31 fifties. 7 of his tons were double centuries. Kohli is regarded as a flamboyant and hardworking cricketer in the format, leaving quite a bit of a legacy. His influence remains pivotal, and how he carried himself there was an aura all around. He made fans fall in love with the format after several Indian legends bid adieu. His aggressive style and passion for the sport remain unparalleled.
Kohli is no doubt a legend, if not one of the many greats. The format requires the level of consistency and grind to keep going to attain the great tag, something Kohli missed from 2020 onward. His best moment in the game was from 2014 to 2019, when he scaled new heights. It can be referred to as his Golden Years in the format. Kohli was out of touch for quite a period and never quite dominated opponents. His last three series were abysmal by his standards, and somehow, one feels it's right for him to walk away and focus solely on ODI cricket.
Here we dig out 3 reasons why Kohli was a good and not great Test cricketer.
