The Spectrum legend is working on a brand-new Magic Knight game

David Jones

It has been 40 years since the gaming world was introduced to Magic Knight. Creator David Jones has always hinted at a new game in the series and now it’s finally happening. So here’s what you can expect to find in David’s new game.

How does it feel returning to the Magic Knight series after all this time, David?

Very comfortable. I’ve been busy writing books for a few years so I didn’t get to do a lot of new programming. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy writing games. Almost a decade ago I looked at writing a new 3D Magic Knight game using Unity, but it didn’t feel right. Going full-on 3D lost a lot of the original style and I didn’t really enjoy using such a large engine. However, taking a closer approach to the original games is working well.

imageYou once told us in an earlier interview that the Magic Knight was actually female and there were plans to reveal this in a game that never happened. Is this going to be that game?

Nope. Whoever or whatever is inside the suit can and does vary from time to time. I have an idea for a novelisation project where I’ll fill in the bits between the games. That, if I ever get to it, will cover the origin story of the Magic Knight and how the original person ended up in the suit.
