The GAMM museum in the heart of Rome shows that preservation is coming of age

Create new save point?

Videogames have long been drawn acceptance, to put themselves on an equal footing with film and music in popular culture, but nowadays those aspirations feel more realistic than ever before. From the success of TV and film adaptations such as Fallout and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 to the awards buzz for Grand Theft Hamlet (see p26), videogame-related stories are in the spotlight like never before. Fittingly, 2024 also saw videogames become further enshrined in a key pantheon of cultural appreciation: museums.

In the past six months alone, three notable videogame museums have opened their doors to the world.

imageNintendo stole the spotlight in October by opening its career-spanning collection in Kyoto, and the Science Museum in the UK now also has a permanent wing dedicated to the world of interactive entertainment. Videogames and related technologies have been part of museum exhibits for years, but vintage consoles, Pong cabinets and cardboard Marios are often fleeting attractions, staged among popup exhibitions to amuse families during half-term breaks. What we're seeing now, however, feels different, as this fledgling artform is finding more permanent institutional homes.

imageThere's no better place to be immortalised, perhaps, than in the birthplace of western civilisation, Rome. Situated on Piazza della Repubblica, nestled between the National Roman Museum and Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (a Renaissance palace dating back to 1883), the GAMM videogame museum resides in a city that is naturally sceptical of its existence. “Italy didn’t have a super-strong case history that immediately showed the power of games to build economic resources like The Witcher

Possessor(s)

After three rounds of layoffs this year and Hyper Light Breaker’s curtailed development in early access, a lot seems to rest for Heart Machine on this plucky Metroidvania side project. The studio has an obvious knack for conjuring up fascinating fantasy worlds, but since its compact debut, Hyper Light Drifter, it’s been less obvious whether it can manage projects of a larger scale. And perhaps, on that count, even the modest Possessor(s) isn’t quite modest enough — it feels as much a victim of the company’s production woes as a showcase for its creative talent.

Street Fighter 6

Superstition might suggest that even numbers are more auspicious for the series, but it's fairer to say that Capcom learned from the mistakes of Street Fighter V and launched a fighting game that doesn't just feel like a full package, but one that has foundations to build on in future updates.

The Outer Worlds 2

There's always a risk in imitating something regarded as a classic: if it offers a template for success, it could just as easily invite unfavourable comparison. Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas has gained that reputation in the 15 years since its release, and while the original The Outer Worlds, led by Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, referenced that series without aping it, the sequel zeroes in on New Vegas as its direct source of inspiration. This explains both why The Outer Worlds 2 is a success and why it can't quite stand tall as a creation with its own identity.
