INS Vikrant's operationalisation is a real testimony to the country's resolve for self-reliance and 'Make in India'

A MAKE IN INDIA IAC

The first ever aircraft carrier to be indigenously designed and constructed, INS Vikrant will strengthen the nation's standing as a Blue Water Navy- a maritime force with global reach and capability to operate over deep seas.

Designed by the Indian Navy's in-house Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), the 262.5 metres long and 61.6 metres wide Vikrant displaces 43,000 tonnes approximately, having a maximum designed speed of 28 Knots with an endurance of 7,500 nautical miles.

The Sanskrit word Vikrant, which means 'courageous' or 'stepping beyond', appears in various Hindu scriptures including the first chapter of the pious Bhagavad Gita.

The new Vikrant will carry the motto of its predecessor, Jayema sam yudhi sprudhah, an expression that appears in the holy Rig Veda, which means: "We conquer those who fight us in war".

But sensible and easy steps can be taken, especially in the maritime sphere, to integrate the Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy into a potent force to safeguard the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, argues AMIT GUPTA
