Andy Westlake tries out a rugged modular front-loading backpack

Db The Ramverk 32L Pro Backpack

€299 + €159 for M or L camera insert (approx £389) eu.dbjourney.com

DB is a Norwegian company that produces a range of bags for outdoor pursuits. Its Ramverk Pro backpacks are designed with photographers in mind, thanks to their ability to accept interchangeable camera inserts. I tested the 32L model, but there’s also a slimmer 26L version.

Three sizes of insert are available. The smallest accepts a camera plus three lenses and occupies approximately half the bag, leaving space for clothing, etc. Meanwhile, the medium and large inserts take up most of the backpack’s interior, but the latter is deeper to accommodate a pro camera with a vertical grip, which means it won’t fit into the 26L backpack. Unusually, all three inserts can accept optional shoulder straps, so they can be used as backpacks on their own. Alternatively, their lids can be unzipped and removed for easier access when you’re using them inside the backpack.

Compact 500mm telezoom from Panasonic

PANASONIC has announced the longest telephoto zoom yet for its L-mount full-frame mirrorless system, in the shape of the Lumix S 100-500mm F5-7.1 OIS. It's impressively small and lightweight given its range, being similar in size to conventional 100-400mm zooms. Panasonic is also promising 'industry leading' optical image stabilisation, with up to 7 stops of shake reduction when shooting handheld.
