Gurugram-based paediatrician Dr. Tarun Singh shares insights into the causes and symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency in children and ways to prevent it
Vitamin D deficiency is a silent epidemic affecting millions of children worldwide. According to some studies, a significant percentage of children are affected by vitamin D deficiency, with estimates ranging from 37.8 percent to 97.5 percent depending on the age group and geographic location, with infants and children with limited solar exposure being particularly susceptible.
Vitamin D is essential for children, especially during their growing years because it enables the body to absorb calcium and phosphorus, crucial to building strong, healthy bones and teeth. Beyond bone health, vitamin D plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy immune system, regulating cell growth, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and has a positive impact on mental health.
Gurugram-based paediatrician Dr. Tarun Singh shares insights into the causes and symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency in children and ways to prevent it.
CAUSES
Several factors prompt vitamin D deficiency among children:
- Vitamin D is primarily produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight. However, today, many children spend most of their time indoors, engaged in digital screen activities, limiting exposure to sunlight. Moreover, children living in regions with long winters and/or heavy pollution may not receive enough sunlight to produce adequate vitamin D.
