Pensioners need more cash to secure a better standard of living

New report says 1.9 million pensioners living in poverty

The Government has been urged to set a minimum retirement income for pensioners, and then make sure everyone gets the cash they need to provide a decent standard of living in old age.

A new Work and Pensions Committee report says that because the state pension is the core of the Government's offer to pensioners, a guiding principle should be that it provides the amount needed for a “minimum, dignified, socially acceptable standard of living”.

The committee of MPs has also urged the Government to commit to a national strategy for an ageing society, that it said would help target support to tackle pensioner poverty.
