Adults – the Gen-Z sitcom that grows up as it goes further on

The new Friends couch is an orange subway seat. Adults has entered the TV comedy scene as the new sitcom about a group of 20-somethings in New York who have no idea what they are doing with their lives.
I am so glad that amid the repeats, revivals and Christmas specials of classic comedies, we finally have something fresh. However, Adults takes a few episodes to find its footing.
The first episode of any sitcom is usually a rough watch. Characters' personalities are often exaggerated to the extent they become caricatures and every other line emphasised just in case it becomes a catchphrase.
Watching a pilot episode can feel like watching a clown who is juggling with their hands, making a balloon animal with their feet and balancing a plate on their head all at the same time just to prove to you that they can do everything. It's no wonder that no one's favourite episode of a show is ever season one episode one.
The opening episode of Adults falls victim to this exact curse. It feels crass, cliché, and strangely for a show titled Adults, quite childish. The issue is that it seems it wants to be the new Friends, but also the new How I Met Your Mother and also the new Broad City, and becomes a clumsy blend of all three.
