EVER driven past a road sign that left you scratching your head or chuckling to yourself?
The UK is home to a plethora of place names that are, quite frankly, amusing for one reason or another. Imagine the laughs on a road trip visiting each of these places - though it would certainly take some time, especially with all photo opportunities.
In light of Frome being declared the most mispronounced place name in the UK recently, we've put together a list of some of the funniest place names you can find in the West Country.
Prepare yourself for a good laugh and a touch of immaturity!
BATH, SOMERSET & BRISTOL AREA
1. Catsgore, Somerset
A parish in the southern limits of Somerton - once the Saxon royal capital of Somerset - the name Catsgore is thought to be a corruption of the Old English ‘catt’ + ‘gara’ meaning ‘place where the wild cats live’.
Nowadays, you probably won't find many wild cats, but you might find the odd tabby if you look hard enough!
2. Curry Mallet
Curry Mallet is a village and parish in Somerset. It is on the Fivehead River, seven miles east of Taunton in the South Somerset district. The village has a population of 306.
3. Mudford Sock, Somerset
Mudford is a village and parish in Somerset, situated three miles from Yeovil in the South Somerset district on the River Yeo. The village has a population of 696. The parish includes the hamlets of Mudford Sock, West Mudford and Up Mud-ford.
4. Swell, Somerset
Swell can be found in Somerset, near Fivehead and the A378.
5. Temple Cloud
Temple Cloud is a village in the civil parish of Temple Cloud with Cameley, located between Bristol and Bath on the A37 road. The nearest town is Midsomer Norton five miles away.
