Woman who beat ill health to become champion dies at 93

TRIBUTES have been paid to one of the Westcountry’s greatest ever sportswomen who overcame huge obstacles to reach the pinnacle of her sport.

Angela Mortimer Barrett, who overcame partial deafness and an intestinal infection to win three Grand Slam singles titles including Wimbledon in 1961, died on Monday aged 93.

The All England Club made the announcement.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Angela Mortimer Barrett, Wimbledon’s oldest surviving ladies’ singles champion,” club chair Deborah Jevans said.

“Angela will be remembered for her determination and extraordinary dedication which saw her overcome significant challenges to rise to the top of tennis, winning three Grand Slam singles titles and one Grand Slam doubles title.

“On behalf of everyone at the All England Club, I offer my sincere condolences to Angela's husband, John; their children, Michael and Sarah Jane; grandchildren, family and friends.”
