Welsh reduction could open the door for Ealing or Worcester
THE Welsh Rugby Union's plan to cut the number of professional teams from four to three could depend on surprise talks to bring an English Championship club into the United Rugby Championship.
We have learned that the URC has held exploratory talks with English Championship outfit Ealing Trailfinders, while Worcester Warriors could also be an option.
The WRU wants to cut down to three professional teams but would need the URC's approval to do so. Without it, they could incur a fine with the competition keen to retain an even number of teams.
