Prison staff injured and teachers left ‘terrified’ in mass disturbance

Staff members were injured and teachers were manhandled and overpowered as the mass disturbance broke out at HMP Parc in Bridgend.

Two of those involved in the fighting - Serhan Doganer and Jaidon Kaul, who were both teenagers at the time - appeared at Cardiff Crown Court to be sentenced for their part in the disorder.

‘The court heard that in February 2023, staff at HMP Parc were having “difficulties” with inmates in the young offenders’ unit due to an ongoing “grievance” between youngsters in the Echo wing and in the Golf wing.

‘As a result of the issues, staff had to keep the two groups separate and movements around the unit had to be coordinated to avoid inmates from the different wings coming into contact with each other.

The court heard on February 10 inmates from both wings were in separate locked rooms in the educational centre of the prison, and were shouting abuse at each other and trying to provoke the other “wing boys”.

Violence erupted when inmates in the library room grabbed their teacher and dragged her to the door, where they overpowered her and used the keys on her chain to unlock the door.
