Mourners for those who die alone

A COUNCIL is to begin asking volunteer mourners to attend the funerals of people who die without any loved ones.

Following a meeting among councillors for Torfaen Borough Council, councillors unanimously backed plans for a group of volunteers to give people who die alone a fitting farewell.

The meeting heard that for each case the council will do checks on the deceased person to find out whether or not they had any family or friends who might be able to attend their funeral.
