Irish leaders 'concerned' about Wylfa, 30-year-old records show

THE Irish government considered taking legal action against the former Wylfa nuclear plant on Anglesey, according to archive documents.

It followed an “incident” in the mid-1990s when part of a crane broke off and fell 25ft onto the highly radioactive core.

It led to the plant's operators Nuclear Electric receiving a £250,000 fine for “blatant violation” of safety rules and at the Mold Crown Court hearing, the then Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations said it was potentially the most serious incident he had come across during his career.

Following the incident and others in England over a short timespan, Ireland’s then-Taoiseach John Bruton raised his concerns with British Prime Minister John Major.

The British Government was told the incidents were a “cause of ongoing deep concern” to the Irish government and the Irish public.
