Give cancer care a level playing field

PEOPLE living with cancer are facing a postcode lottery when it comes to access to treatment and distances travelled just to reach that care.

That is the stark concern from Macmillan Cancer Support, coupled with predictions from Public Health Wales (PHW) that cases of cancer could rise by 11% over the next decade.

Macmillan says some patients are turning down vital tests and treatment because of travel times, potentially putting 100,000 lives at risk UK-wide. The charity said too many patients feel they need to be “in the right place, at the right time” and called for “urgent action” to make access fair.

Such a patchwork of care has been dubbed “a game of chance” by Macmillan’s lead medical adviser Dr Anthony Cunliffe.
