Concern as more home schooled

October 02, 2025

THE "astonishing" rise in the number of children being schooled at home is a cause for concern at one Welsh local authority.

At a meeting of Blaenau Gwent council's governance and audit committee, councillors and independent lay members received a report on the annual self-assessment and well-being of the council during 2024/2025.

This report is a legal requirement for all local authorities in Wales to produce and provides a factual account of its performance during the year.

One section in the 85-page document focuses on education, with data included on school attendance, pupil exclusions and the outcome of Estyn inspections of schools in the county borough.

The section also provides information on the number of children in Blaenau Gwent being taught at home.
