'By-election could be pivotal for Senedd and its Budget'

The vote to pass the Senedd Commission's budget is closely tied to the passing of the Welsh Government's budget, which could hang in jeopardy next year depending on the result of the by-election in Caerphilly on October 23.

Ms Jones told the committee there were unknowns about the future timetable and capacity of the new Senedd and they can prepare for that but the exact finances cannot yet be exactly determined.

She was asked what would happen if the Welsh Government budget didn’t pass. The Senedd’s draft budget is voted on first but is also part of the considerably larger Welsh Government budget.

If the Welsh Government fails to get a budget through there could be huge consequences, she said.

Ms Jones said: “The standing orders mean that if the Senedd budget is not passed then it will be 95% of the current year’s budget.

“Of course, 95% of the usual current year’s budget is difficult but possibly manageable.
