Barry-Murphy playing down the hype over Cardiff's kids

BRIAN Barry-Murphy says he’s excited by the level of talent emerging at Cardiff City, but admits he’s wary of ‘creating a bandwagon’ of excitement around some of his youngsters.

On what was otherwise a disappointing Tuesday night in the EFL Cup defeat to Newport County, Rob Tankiewicz briefly became the youngest player to ever play for the Bluebirds.

But his record lasted just 64 minutes as 15-year-old Axel Donczew replaced him off the bench, and the pair's introduction to the first team setup will understandably create some excitement around Cardiff fans.

That said, many City supporters will have surely left Cardiff City Stadium a little deflated after watching their side stunned by struggling County, who arrived in the capital having won just one of their opening 11 league games.

“I think Newport deserved to win,” Barry-Murphy acknowledged afterwards. “They needed the win for their own reasons.

“But from our point of view. You got the first sign of Rob Tankiewicz, who had a really good debut and was probably close to coming on on Saturday.
