Abuser pinned victim to bed and held knife to her throat

A N ABUSER subjected his partner to a terrifying ordeal after holding a knife to her throat and hitting her arm with a hurling stick.

He later apologised and asked her to promise not to call the police before walking off with a knife in his sock.

Damien Shearer, 45, had been out drinking with the victim at a rugby club in Newport on July 14 last year, before taking a taxi into the city centre, where he drank 10 pints of beer.

When his partner said she wanted to go home, he became angry and threw the one set of keys to her house.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard the defendant told the victim he was contemplating throwing himself in the river and she was concerned for his safety.

Unknown to her, he found the house keys, took a taxi home and went to bed, while the victim called out an emergency locksmith at great cost.
