'Glad to see authority bow to pressure over charges'

December 18, 2025

YEOVIL Constituency Labour Party has said Somerset Council bowed to pressure to drop plans to extend Sunday charges to all its car parks, following a campaign led by the local Labour Party.

Labour's petition to stop Lib-Dem led Somerset council’ plans was signed by many high street businesses, Sunday shoppers and religious worshippers, who all rely on free Sunday parking.

Astatement said Labour also argued strongly that the law prohibits using car park charges to raise revenue for general services, so any increased income could not be used to balance the struggling council's budget. The statement said:

“The Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 instructs councils to keep revenue raised from parking in a ring-fenced Special Parking Account.
