Wartime ruse may be the solution to overtourism crisis

LOTS of things make holidaying a strain — lost luggage, food poisoning, extensible suitcase handles ~ but the worst is, of course, other holidaymakers, and not only because the loutish conduct of many Brits abroad makes it that much harder for the rest of us to find a warm welcome.
The sheer volume of visitors to certain locations - especially nowadays, when for many the only point of doing anything is to brag about it on Instagram - is apt to ruin the entire experience both for those who are only passing through and residents of places where the economic benefits of mass tourism have been dwarfed by the environmental and societal damage. The National Parks Service has long sought to mitigate the impact on the US's most cherished natural wonders by running a daily ticket ballot at its busiest sites - if you don’t win then you don’t get in - while in Rome you now have to pay in advance even to approach the Trevi Fountain, never mind fling a euro into it.
