Pair of new rail stations will be built ‘in parallel’

SOMERSET’S newest railway station will be delivered “in parallel” with a new station down the line in Devon, according to Network Rail.

Following the conclusion of its spending review, the Government announced in mid-June 2025 that rail services would be returning to Wellington more than 60 years after its original station closed as part of the infamous Beeching cuts.

Bloor Homes South West is constructing the access road to the new station as part of its Lillebonne Place development of 178 homes.

Network Rail has now confirmed that the station will be built at the same time as its sister station in Cullompton, with both stations forming part of the “Devon Metro” on the Bristol to Exeter mainline.

While the land around the station will be developed by Bloor, the actual station site will be subject to separate planning permission, which would have to be approved by Somerset Council before construction can begin on the £20m station.
