NEARLY 250 people were arrested during a Christmas crackdown on drink and drug drivers.

- PAUL GREAVES

Officers for Avon and Somerset Police carried out roadside stops to catch those who put themselves and others at risk of injury or death.

Police have also shared statistics about the staggering number of serious crashes in the patch.

Drink and drug driving has been a factor in 25 per cent of all fatal collisions across Avon and Somerset this year, police say.

During the latest operation, a total of 243 people were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving from December 1 to December 28.

Police are urging the public to help them remove dangerous drivers from the road and take active steps to stop them.
