Trading arrangements being thrashed out with US
Vietnam Investment Review
|June 22, 2026
Vietnam is working with the US on ways to reach a trade balance and circumvent the latter’s high tariffs via a reciprocal trade deal.
Vietnamese Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc on June 10 met with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, reaffirming Vietnam’s desire to deepen its comprehensive strategic partnership with the US.
DPM Tuc said that Vietnam considered the US as one of its most important partners, and it would create better conditions for US enterprises to invest and conduct business in the country.
“He suggests that both countries closely work with each other to soon complete negotiations of a fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade deal based on harmonised benefits for both sides,” stated the Department of Information and Press under Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The deal was reached in July 2025 between Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump. Under the deal, Vietnam will pay the United States a 20 per cent tariff on all goods sent into its territory, and a 40 per cent tariff on any transshipping.
