DOHA - World No. 2 Iga Swiatek experienced heartbreak on Valentine's Day, when the Pole's reign as three-time Qatar Open defending champion ended after she lost 6-3, 6-1 to the 37th-ranked Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-finals on Feb 14.
In the process, Ostapenko extended her unbeaten record against the five-time Grand Slam champion to 5-0 as Swiatek's 15-match winning streak in the tournament came to an end.
"I was pretty confident that I would beat her, because we've played a lot of matches and I know how to play against her," Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open winner, said in her on-court interview.
"I was more focusing on myself and what I had to do. I'm happy with the way I'm handling my emotions this week."
