Coach says guard wasn't going to let them lose as Cleveland end Indiana's 6-game run
-
Donovan Mitchell is the Cleveland Cavaliers' star man and he was not going to let them down. On Jan. 14, the Cavs, fueled by his 35 points, beat the Indiana Pacers 127-117 on the road and avenged a Jan. 12 National Basketball Association (NBA) defeat while pushing their league-best record to 34-5.
Just days after the Pacers ended Cleveland's 12-game winning streak - handing them just their second home loss of the season - the Cavs traveled to Indianapolis and halted Indiana's six-game victorious run.
Mitchell set the tone early on, scoring 19 points in the first quarter. The Pacers briefly grabbed a two-point lead early in the second quarter and trailed by just one at halftime, but the Cavs outscored them 38-28 in the third to take control.
Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson said it was the response he was looking for after the Jan. 12 defeat. "It was a play-off-type response," he said. "You get knocked in the teeth, punched in the mouth, and we responded.
"Really, Donovan set the tone. It was one of those nights where he wasn't going to let us lose."
