French President Emmanuel Macron on June 17 underlined his differences with US President Donald Trump over Iran, appearing to oppose tougher military action against Tehran that could lead to regime change and plunge Iran and the region into chaos.

KANANASKIS, Canada - French President Emmanuel Macron on June 17 underlined his differences with US President Donald Trump over Iran, appearing to oppose tougher military action against Tehran that could lead to regime change and plunge Iran and the region into chaos.
Mr Macron on June 16 had suggested to reporters that Mr Trump was leaving a Group of Seven (G-7) gathering as part of efforts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
He was firmly rebuffed on the morning of June 17, when Mr Trump said on X that Mr Macron was mistaken and his departure had nothing to do with securing a ceasefire.
Since June 17, Mr Trump has upped the bellicose rhetoric demanding Iran's "unconditional surrender", and warned that US patience was wearing thin as the Israel-Iran air war raged for a fifth day.
