Singapore-born, New York-based pianist Kate Liu opened the 2025 Singapore International Piano Festival (SIPF) with a programme which drew many piano enthusiasts.

Most would have learnt the early Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart sonata, and some of the other favourites she chose by Johannes Brahms and Frederic Chopin. In 2015, her prize-winning performances at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition thrust her into the upper echelons of the piano world, and expectations were high for her SIPF debut.
Liu's programme was deceptive. What seemed an easy pairing of Mozart and Brahms with her favourite Chopin was in fact a tale of unrequited love, sandwiched by death and sorrow.
