EU regulator says suicidal thoughts are side effect of hair loss drug
The Straits Times
|May 10, 2025
The European drugs regulator has said that its safety panel has confirmed suicidal thoughts as a side effect of anti-hair-loss drug finasteride and its generic versions, following a European Union-wide review of available data.

BRUSSELS -
Most cases of suicidal thoughts were reported in people taking the 1 milligram (mg) finasteride tablet.
These tablets are used to treat androgenetic alopecia — a condition of hair loss brought on by male hormones.
The frequency of the side effect, however, could not be determined from the available data, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on May 8.
The health agency said in October 2024 that it was reviewing finasteride and another anti-hair-loss drug, dutasteride, over the risk of suicidal thoughts.
