Palestinians and the families of Israeli hostages broke into wild celebrations on Oct 9 after news of a pact between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza and return home all the Israeli hostages, both living and dead.

- KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza/TEL AVIV

In Gaza, where most of the more than two million people have been displaced by Israeli bombing, young men applauded in the devastated streets, even as Israeli strikes continued in some parts of the enclave.

“Thank God for the ceasefire, the end of bloodshed and killing,” said Mr Abdul Majeed Abd Rabbo in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

“Thank you and all the love to those who stood with us.”

Advantage Beijing in latest US-China spat

On Oct 10, Mr Trump shattered a fragile tariff truce between the world's two largest economies when he announced 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods on top of levies of about 57 per cent already in place. The provocation was China's decision a day earlier to further restrict the export of rare earth metals, indispensable to the high-tech economy.
