India's equity participation deepens with record domestic inflows: SEBI

India's capital markets are undergoing a structural transformation marked by unprecedented domestic participation and a deepening equity culture, stated Ananth Narayan G, whole-time member, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), while addressing the CII Capital Markets Conclave held in Kolkata today.

Over the last five years, the number of unique demat account holders has more than tripled, surpassing 10 crore.

Domestic savers have invested Rs 18 lakh crore (USD 210 billion) into equity risk-oriented mutual fund schemes—including hybrid funds—over the past six years, with the AUM in these schemes soaring from Rs 12 lakh crore in June 2019 to Rs 53 lakh crore currently.

Mr Narayan highlighted that nearly half of all mutual fund folios now come from beyond the top 30 cities, signalling the widespread democratisation of equity investments.
