South Africa, bowled out for just 159 on the opening day after choosing to bat first, staged a remarkable comeback to defeat India by 30 runs in the first Test at Eden Gardens on Sunday. Chasing a modest target of 124, India collapsed to 93 all out in 35 overs on Day 3.
This victory marked South Africa's first Test win in India in 15 years and gave them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Off-spinner Simon Harmer starred with figures of 4-21, while the rest of the attack combined to dismantle India’s batting on a challenging surface.
India sorely missed Shubman Gill, ruled out due to neck surgery. South Africa extended their lead to 123 in the second innings, thanks to captain Temba Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 and a 44-run stand with Corbin Bosch. Harmer’s incisive bowling, supported by Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, and Keshav Maharaj, ensured the visitors silenced the Eden Gardens crowd.
