Macron's recognition of Palestine: A turning point for the Middle East

FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron has made a significant decision to recognise the State of Palestine, aiming to promote peace in the conflict-ridden Middle East.

This announcement is anticipated to occur before the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September.

Before France’ recognition, 10 of the 27 EU countries had acknowledged Palestinian statehood, according to media reports in Europe.

Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Poland, and Romania recognised Palestine in 1988 before joining the EU. Sweden was the first EU member to do so in October 2014.

On May 28, 2024, Spain and Ireland recognised Palestine, aiming to aid peace efforts between Israelis and Palestinians, followed by Slovenia's recognition on June 4, 2024.

“We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We must also ensure the demilitarisation of Hamas, secure, and rebuild Gaza. And finally, we must build the State of Palestine, guarantee its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarisation and fully recognising Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the region, Macron said.

The Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) has now called on South Africa to continue supporting its fight for independence from Israel.
